Here's how I work out how to do a wall, so it doesn't look squished. And yes - instead of writing down the ratios, so I know it everytime - I work it out everytime.
Go into Homecrafter - Tiles, and pick the lavender/blue/grey tile (It has squares in the finished version). Now if you look at the bitmap version - the squares are squished. So that's what your 256x512 version needs to look like.
You have 2 choices - either you can make your wallpaper in the 256x512 version, taking into account the squished squares. Which works fine with geometric patterns, or patterns that don't have too much problems with being elongated.
Or.pick out 1 tile, and find out what size it is (61x40) and use your paintshop to work out what the percentages are to make it 61x61 - the ratio is 1: 1.5250.
So if you make your wallpaper with an initial width:height of 256x778 pixels
Then when you are finished - shrink it back to 256x512. It will be in the right ratios for Homecrafter.
