First I draw the outlines and floodfill with the colour I have chosen. Like this:
Then I make a colour that's somewhat darker and one that's somewhat lighter using Lighten/Darken and draw a parting and some lines at the lengh of the hair. I also fill "the underhair" with the dark colour
Now I want to soften those lines but I don't want to soften the edges of the hair so I select the whole picture and then use the magic wand to unselct everything outside the hair. I don't want the edges to become transparent either so I make a copy of the layer and work at the top copy. Then I use the soften tool.
Now I'm going to darken some areas. Let's start with the parting. I use a two pixel wide brush for this and I darken this area. I almost always work with an opasity of 30. I always make the middle of the area the darkest and then make it less and less dark the further away from the middle I get but when making the parting that is not really possible wich I'll explai later.
These are the areas I have darkened on this doll. Apart from the parting I darken the parts of the hair I think is "going indwards"
I then slightly darken the part of the head that's furthes away from me to make if appear round and perhaps some other areas like the ones that are shown with yellow here.
Now I start to lighten much the same way as I darkened. I start with the areas just to each side of the parting. This is the only place I have a sharp - more or less - line because I lighten right next to the dark area. I start with 1 pixel brush nearest to the dark area and then make it softer outwards with a two pixel brush. I even lighten over some areas I have darkened earlier but it will be okay. :biggrin
Here you see how I first make the lightest parts
And then I soften it with making a bigger area less and less light. This is how it ends up.
These are the areas I have lightened so far.
Now we come to the finishing touch. First make 4 dots in another colour and on another layer - they are just there to guide you. Like this.
Start with the right side that is not going to ba sa light as the othr one. Make your brush 9 pixels big and click outside the hair so that dot is in the lower left corner of the brush. Then hold shift down and click on the other side of the hair once with the other dot in the upper right corner of the brush.
Now make your brush 7 pixels and do the same thing only this time you move the brush to the other side and click still holding down shift twice. Then 5 pixels and 3 times - 3 piexls and 4 times 1 pixel and 5 times. This is how it looks
Now make the other side the same way only starting with 13 pixels and ending with 1 pixel 7 times. Notise that I don't count the first click where you don't hold down shift.
That was both sides.
And this is the finished doll.
