Both creativity exercises and pointers on how to write sound useful. Of course you don't have to write them for me if you don't want to or don't have the time, girls. Edited: I found some of the exercises from Emma's books here: mysite.du.edu/~bkiteley/exercises.htmlThe books are also quite cheap at Amazon.

I just went "Ugh" and then "Oh well" over the NaNoWriMo official website. Cos I found this:
Start from scratch. None of your own previously written prose can be included in your NaNoWriMo draft (though outlines, character sketches, and research are all fine, as are citations from other people's works).
in the rules section and got bummed out cos I have a few tidbits (only a couple of pages) I'd like to be able to use. But then I realized that rule is just required if you want a chance at being an official winner and since my aim is more along the lines of "just get some writing done for once!" I've decided to ignore that bit. ^_^
How's everyone's prep-work going?

No prep-work at all, just one of Kiri's exercises so far... I'm pretty busy in the end this year so as November grows closer I grow more and more uncertain about doing this... Encourament or something, girls?

That counts as prepwork! Me, I haven't done anything, lol. Been too tired. I'm gonna start preparing a bit this week though...
I think you should defenitally do it though, Jessica! Remember, it's about quantity rather than quality! Quite nice for a change, I think...haha!

Yup - definitely counts as prep-work.
The rules don't bother me Emma either. As far as I'm concerned, its about getting the thing written - regardless of where I pull in the ideas, pages, and notes - so yeah, I agree. Becoming an official winner is not necessarily on my list of things that are important.
Jess - I really think you should do it, or at least start it. Remember you can start it and if it gets too much with everything else going on, at least you've got a bit of your book done. And you've been motivated to start writing again - and that's a great thing.
Prep-work done:
I've organised with my Personal torturer to move my torturing time around so that I can write between 3 - 7pm every day. (It helps being unemployed - way more time to play with). I don't think I'll necessarily need that much time every day - but we'll see.
I've found an old planner for Peter's story, and dug out all my writing notes. Read through the stories again. Having not looked at it for 3+ years it's a renewing experience to get back into their heads, and have them walk through my life.
I've also started thinking on one of the exercises with Amelia and Petr in the bath with a secret. I'm liking the idea so much, that I think I'll put it in the book as well.
So no writing, but lots of reading, and thinking and preparing.
My plan is to finish the plot synopsis (a la the planner I found) by the end of next week. That'll divide the work up into tasty bits so that I can choose which bits to do on the day as the mood takes me.
I can put up the planner if you like, although it probably won't make much sense without a lot of the class notes. Which I'm currently re-reading after having been found again.

Oh man, Kiri. You put us all to shame, hah!
I really should get cracking on making a more detailed plan of what happens in each chapter. Maybe I'll do that next week since I've Monday-Thursday off because of an exam next Friday.
