For anyone looking into purchasing a new computer and wanting to stick to Windows 7 rather than go with Windows 8, it is still possible to do so (it is also still very possible to purchase a boxed copy of Windows 7 for anyone looking to do a custom build, albeit you'll often find the OEM version the only "difference" in this context is really just packaging as it's otherwise identical in terms of the operating system, itself, compared to the much more expensive boxed copy) and there are still computers out there made by commercial builders, where it remains an option. However, starting on October 31 of this year (or Halloween in some countries), the Home edition of Windows 7 will no longer be available nor will you find new computers that have that edition installed (the "pro" version of Windows 7, however, should still be available pre-installed on computers sold to businesses, due to Microsoft being forced to extend that deadline). So far, there has been no word as to whether other editions will continue to be available or not after that date. Also, if someone purchases a new computer with Windows 8 pre-installed and then decide they hate it/want Windows 7, they may have the option to "downgrade" 8 to Windows 7 again if they prefer (albeit, it will be the pro version and not Home).

I'm really removed from the community now, and I'm just curious, has there been issues for people running Sims2 on Windows 8? My computer is running fine, but it is good to know these things.

Yeah - Windows 8 and Sims 2 do need a bit of tweaking to make it work, and some things have to be turned off depending on the O/S Graphics Card combo. Small Hint - Try not to have an Intel card with Windows 8 - they don't seem to like each other very much with Sims 2.
I have a huge thread over at Leefish where I'm fixing graphic card issues.

Oh boy! I purchased Windows 7 a few months ago because of the issue of Microsoft no longer updating Windows XP. I have to get it installed though... Week-end program: back-up of everything I have on my computer. I still have to phone a compagny which offers servicing from their office. I never installed Windows myself and I won't know what to answer to the questions that will undoubtedly appear on my screen! This is a time when I hate progress!!!

The funny thing about Microsoft's dropping support for XP has been the massive outcry of complaints--especially from the business sector (not just consumers)--as XP still remains extremely popular. However, what I found funny personally about Win7 is how many features actually came from Linux (a completely different, actually competing operating system that Microsoft has historically complained as one of their biggest threats).
Regardless, it's still much better than Vista and fairly close in terms of its interface to XP (which is why it's been more widely adopted and remains the second largest Windows OS in use) and definitely better than the other disaster (from a financial/adoption standpoint) for Microsoft, Windows 8/8.1 (which led to a major executive who was partly responsible for it getting the chop/axed from the company--ironically the same week as Apple fired a major executive whom they deemed responsible for the disaster that was their mapping software for iOS).

Doesn't surprise me at all. A lot of the features in XP were features from a rival software as well. Microsoft is NOT that innovative - more acquisitional.

It's not even just limited to them as far as the tech sector goes or, obviously, XP. Ironically, I had another reminder of this, this past week in a course I'm presently taking where an almost legendary example arose involving Apple (who often either seems to get a pass in this area or overlooked) as well as Microsoft regarding just the subject of interfaces.
For those unfamiliar, there was infamous lawsuit involving Apple and Microsoft many years ago over how Microsoft supposedly "stole" Apple's interface when Microsoft developed the early versions of Windows--what almost never (if ever) gets mentioned is that both companies (as well as the now defunct Amiga series that was sold/distributed by Commodore) actually took it from someone else (specifically, Xerox's famed PARC facility where not-so-coincidentally, one of the founders of Apple also happened to be employed as his "day job" (although, he did not work on the interface). There's even a famous exchange that reportedly took place between Bill Gates and Steve Jobs involving that lawsuit and quote associated with it between the two where they even acknowledged the fact that they had stolen the PARC's efforts in "creating" their own.
Just as on a side note, the mouse also came from PARC (for anyone curious, the Computer History Museum in California actually has the original mouse they developed on display there--along with a number of other interesting items, including mention of as well as the box for Sims1).
