I have forgotten so much basic stuff about general gameplay! Help! When you are playing and just want to close the game window to check something else, how do you do that? I remember I used to press a few buttons, but which ones?

It is definitely alt-tab (it's a basic DirectX "function"/command that Microsoft introduced in either one version of DX5 or 6--I can't remember now what the version number/build was, given how long ago it was, but I do remember that it was a very celebrated "feature" to finally have! The same command also applies to most games in Windows that rely upon DirectX in some way).

I do just like Countess Crazy does. I don't think I ever used Alt-Tab

It's odd as the Windows key was designed to bring up the start menu--with the side effect that it takes you to the desktop. It was never meant to go back and forth between a DX (or even OpenGL)-driven program and the desktop.
I actually try and avoid that route if I can unless it's a last resort--it's usually recommended to stick with alt-tab if you're going to go back and forth versus the Windows key.

My Windows key just brings up the start menu, but alt-tab works like a charm

CC, you are the expert, so I will stop using the Windows key and use alt-tab instead.
Thanks
