Are you playing Vanilla?
If so - can you send me the log?

Kiri, I dont know where to find the 'log' its talking about. If 'Vanilla" means without mods, yes! I only have custom content, no mods at all....I have all expansions installed and Fast Lane and High-End loft stuff packs. I tried to google the error, (which apparently has come up with other expansions players had installed) and some answers where uninstalling everything and re-installing! I am trying to avoid doing that.... Felicity

Have you tried removing your custom content and clearing your cache files?
Also, are you using package files or just Sims3pack files for custom content--if it's the former, have you tried removing the resource file (I can't remember the extension for it at the moment, but it's required to use package files and appears as resource.x where x=whatever the actual extension name is)?
With some error messages, they may appear in your My Documents->Electronic Arts->Sims 3 directory and are sometimes sorted by date. There are usually two files--one is the "dump" file that is generated upon the error and the second is a text copy. The game also may keep a log elsewhere as well, but I'm in the wrong operating system and without access to the partition where that directory is to be able to say for certain.

\My Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Sims3Logs.xml
is what your log file looks like.
You need to take out all custom content, not just hacks - once your game loads, you can then put it back in.
Also delete these files:
CASPartCache.package compositorCache.package scriptCache.package simCompositorCache.package
from the same location.

Thank you CC and Kiri for your help! I backed up my custom content (sims3pack files and packages) and removed them. Backed up my 'saves' folder too. I still got the same error message. After much googling and reading other error reports I also used that option of deleting those cache files. I tried to start the game again, but the same message popped up! So, I have un-installed everything and re-installed again, in the order that is suggested. Generations is now working. Now I am not sure if I want to put all the custom content back again.....in case the error process starts all over. Am just pleased that I can play! Felicity

Try putting in the package ones. Leave the Sims3pack ones until last.
Reason why: Package ones can just be taken out of the game and it won't stay in. Sims3packs will stay in unless you delete them out of the DCCache and DCBackup as well.

Thank you so very much for your help Kiri! Have put the package files back, and the Sims3packs. So far the game is running wonderfully! I just had to install my extra World'sagain, which I did from my Sims3packs and have basically got to where I was before! Felicity

Glad you sorted it out, Felicity! Sometimes it feels like all we do with this game is fixing stuff.
