I had mentioned something about this a while back and honestly hoped to have been able to post about this much sooner, but didn't expect to be kept as busy as I have been lately.
Having said that, for those that remember the case of the infamous Firefox extension as added by Microsoft without asking the users if they wanted it there, it seems Sun chose to follow their example and did something similar when they decided to release the recent update for Java.
However, unlike Microsoft's add-on, the one from Sun (which is called "Java Quickstart") can be disabled, at least--removal is another story. Also, it appears that whenever the next Java update comes, even if you disable it, it will become re-enabled again.
So far, it remains unclear as to what exactly this plugin actually does, however, other than possibly make use of memory.
On that note, if anyone here is still running Firefox 3.0.6, I would strongly recommend updating to the most recent version/"build" of it (3.0.8)--3.0.6 had some issues involving memory leaks and mismanagement that have since been resolved.
