For those who hadn't heard, Yahoo will be shutting down Geocities completely sometime in mid-year and any sites and content on them will be deleted. The article presents a history of the service in a sometimes amusing way from its early days up until the present.

That was like reading an obituary! I suppose they have to make way for the new if not many people are making use of it anymore! Felicity

The decision behind Geocities shutdown actually wasn't due to not enough people making use of it--it was mostly due to economics and financial reasons by Yahoo as they need to cut costs and Geocities isn't seen as profitable (at least, not enough to keep it sustainable) by them, so they felt it had to go.

Yeah - Yahoo has been shutting down quite a few other utilities too - so it makes sense that Geocities was going to go.

Thanks for the heads up. I used to use Geocities and while I don't think I have anything left on my account that needs to be saved, I should double check.
