For those unfamiliar with the term, a bot/botnet in this context is a form of malware which can either turn someone's computer into a "zombie" (without or without the user being aware their computer has been compromised--in some cases, a user may begin having problems with their system upon infection, but in others they might not and it just "sits" there)--a system that has been compromised and is sometimes being used to further spread malware (including different forms of it), send out spam, or made use of by maliciously-minded groups (or sometimes criminal gangs) or individuals to commit various crimes ranging from fraud to to identity theft to attacks against other systems and even networks in some cases--again, sometimes without the user even being aware of it being there. This list includes the current, "most wanted" (in the sense of most damaging/destructive/dangerous, most prevalent/wide-spread, and most difficult to seem to be rid of) "botnets" currently on the loose--this only includes the so-called "top ten" as there are many more out there, but these are currently regarded as the "worst of the worst" at the moment. It also currently only includes numbers of estimated systems that are infected in the US and does not include how many more out there are affected elsewhere in the world. It also is limited to Windows-only forms of malware as well. In addition to the list of botnets, it also includes a breakdown into what each one actually does as well as in how it's spread/infects systems, for those curious.
