For those who may be unaware, in Canada, there exists a fee collected from the sale of blank media formats (such as cassette tapes, blank CDs/DVDs, etc.) which then goes toward the non-profit Canadian Private Copying Collective (CPCC), who in turn distribute that money to songwriters, recording artists, publishers, and record companies. However, with the changes in technology and in just musical formats and media (in addition to the ongoing problems within the recording industry), the CPCC is complaining of concerns that the money raised from this fee would disappear and are therefore lobbying for a change in legislation in that country to include iPods and similar devices (including other types of MP3 players). Some people, however, are complaining that it feels as though they are being forced to pay twice for their music (once for the CD or song/album, itself, and again for the player). The proposed tax would be determined by the size that the amount that the player could hold, with the greater the capacity, the larger the levy. The change in legislation would also make it illegal to make a copy of purchased CDs (or digital music) even as a "back up" or for one's own use.
