I've just got the "old" PC back so I have access to my simmies again! It also means I have my own PC (sort of) so i've been just setting it up again so I can use it. I originally plugged in a set of old speakers (MS-695...Veryyy Old) and everything was fine, then while going through Add/Remove Progs. I had to restart the PC so I did. When I rebooted there was no sound at all, so I decided to plug some slightly newer speakers in to see whether it was just the speakers finally giving up the ghost but there was just nothing coming. Whenever I load Itunes or WMP it says it has a problem with the Speakers and just won't play anything. It's driving me insane trying to find out whats wrong so I was just wondering if anyone had ever had this problem or had any ideas on how to solve it? Whenever I reboot the PC now the window pops up saying that there is new hardware to be installed and it needs to search for the drivers - So I click Next... and it searches and doesn't find anything. I'm pretty sure we don't have the disc for either pair of speakers (If they even came with one anyway, which i'm not too sure about) When i run dxdiag it appears to not recognise I have a soundcard. I really do!! Becky Edit: Just realised this is in the wrong place...sorry

Dxdiag typically displays what might be considered "relevant" hardware components which would need to meet DX-compliance or standards (things such as the soundcard/driver, video card/drive, etc.) and might be more relevant toward tasks such as gaming or anything else which might use or require DirectX. It's a good resource to use if you need and want a quick, basic list of most hardware as well as driver information, but it's by no means a complete list and in some cases, not the best tool to find out what's going on with hardware.
That said, though, what does it say when you go into system under the control panel? That should give you a more accurate list of what you have as well as more information as to what may be going on.
Also, in the control panel, there should be an option labeled "audio", what is that displaying or is it listing the sound card?
I forgot to ask this earlier, but is the soundcard driver showing up anywhere in one of the above options or in the programs list?

Ooh. I figured it out. Somewhere along the way the driver for the soundcard had been deleted so it just wasn't registering. It's all sorted now though.
Thankyouuuu!

I'm happy that everything got sorted out. From the sound of things, it looked like a driver issue (which I was trying to get at, albeit more round-about), since it complained it couldn't even locate the soundcard. Also, on a similar note, I forgot to mention this earlier that the age of speakers really shouldn't matter as the technology for them quite honestly hasn't changed a great deal in years (just as with soundcards, there appears to not really be much "left" that can be researched or done to improve things in comparison to now, hence why Creative (the overwhelmingly largest and among the few companies even left anymore to manufacture soundcards) has been also shifting their focus toward other types of products in the past few years).

I didn't think it should do, that's what I found so strange. Thank you for your help anyway! Becky
